Steve Albert Memorial & Scholarship Fund
Dr. Steve Albert, a’h, served Mercaz Academy as its first Chairman of the Board of Education and as one of the founding incorporators. But these titles do not adequately reflect Steve’s fundamental contributions during the formative discussions that created the framework of Mercaz Academy as an independent Jewish day school in central Long Island. Every lay leader brought different strengths and skills, but Steve alone brought to bear his impressive professional perspectives as an educator that allowed Mercaz Academy to move from concept to reality.
Steve Albert received his Doctor of Psychology degree from Yeshiva University, his Master’s degree in School Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and an additional Master’s degree in Education Leadership from Bank Street College of Education. In addition, he obtained New York State certificates in School Administration and Supervision, and in School District Administration.
Professionally, Steve rose in the ranks at the NYC Department of Education, from which he retired after 31 years from the post of the Executive Director of Program and Regulatory Affairs, where he oversaw the City’s psychologists, social workers, supervisors, and the special education IEP process. Steve then became a private consultant, supporting families through the special education process and helping schools and organizations better serve students with disabilities.
Steve’s service to students extended well beyond his work life. Steve volunteered countless hours and endless effort in his capacity as the Chairman of the Board of Education of the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County. In his more than ten years in that role, Steve spearheaded major changes that put HANC on a strong educational trajectory and developed its policies and procedures in support of student life.
Steve’s depth of knowledge and experience both as a professional and volunteer proved invaluable. It was this experience that Steve brought to Mercaz Academy and the Young Israel of Plainview. He was not only a good friend; he was a mentor and a leader. Although his passing has left our community at a loss, Steve positioned our school well to keep moving and growing with an ethic and a drive toward academic excellence that Steve instilled at Mercaz Academy.
Steve’s wife Sharon and his children have worked with Mercaz to create this memorial and scholarship foundation in Steve’s name. We hope you will generously donate in his memory.
